Your focus
Free throws are won or lost by focus. Players without a deliberate routine rely on feel, which disappears under pressure. A specific, rehearsed pre-shot routine creates a focus tunnel that blocks external stimuli and anchors the brain to the task. Elite free-throw shooters describe their routine as automatic , built through repetition.
Player designs a 5-step free throw routine (e.g., catch, 3 bounces, breath, look, shoot) and writes it down.
Practice the exact routine 20 times with no distractions to establish automaticity.
Add maximum distraction (team standing in lane, coach asking questions mid-routine) for next 20 attempts.
Track percentage in both conditions. Close the gap to under 10% difference.
Goal
Success is having the exact same routine on every free throw attempt in the session, no variation, no deviation. Automatic is the goal.
Helpful cues
- Your routine is your focus, do not deviate from it
- Label each step: 'Catch. Three bounces. Breathe. See the rim. Shoot.'
- The routine must stay the same whether you're 0-for-2 or 2-for-2
