How it works

Build the effort and courage to take a charge by willingly putting the body in front of an attacking player.

What you need

  • basketball
  • hoop
  • padding (optional)

Your focus

Taking a charge is a pure effort play that requires no skill, only bravery and willingness to sacrifice the body. Teams that produce multiple charges per game typically outcompete on every other effort play as well. Teaching players to take charges early builds a team-first, effort-first culture.

1

Offensive player attacks the basket at 50% speed. Defender sets feet in the charge circle.

2

On contact, defender stays feet-set and falls backward in a controlled, safe fall.

3

Coach confirms legal charge position. Work up to 75% speed as players become comfortable.

4

Switch roles after 5 reps each. Praise every player who takes a charge.

Helpful cues

  • Two feet set before they arrive, timing is everything
  • Fall back and stay on the ground, sell it and be safe
  • This is the hardest, bravest play in basketball, respect it
