Your focus
The jump from drill to game decision making is the hardest in basketball. 4v4 reduces crowding, amplifies decision points, and makes individual reads clearly visible. Players who can articulate their decisions after each possession are processing the game at an elite level.
Play 4v4 half-court scrimmage. After every possession, coach asks one player to explain their key decision.
Player must identify: what they saw, what options they had, and why they chose what they did.
Coach provides real-time feedback: 'That was the right read' or 'What else did you see?'
Play 20 possessions, reviewing 10 of them. Track decision accuracy.
Goal
It's clicking when the evaluation shows the right decision even on possessions that don't score, good process producing the right outcome regardless of the make.
Helpful cues
- Why matters more than what, explain your thinking
- If you can't explain it, you haven't processed it yet
- Great decision makers see the play one pass ahead of where the ball is
