Your focus
Fast break situations require rapid, accurate decision making under physical pressure. Players who hesitate or make the wrong read turn advantages into equal-number situations. The 3v2 drill is the most efficient format to train the passing, driving, and shooting decisions that define fast break basketball.
Three offensive players start at half-court against two defenders who start at the free-throw line.
On 'Go,' offense attacks and must make a decision at each key point: cross half-court, enter the paint, finish.
Ball handler reads: if defenders collapse, kick out; if one defender cheats, attack the gap.
Coach reviews each possession: Was the right decision made at each decision point?
Goal
Success is converting the 3v2 advantage into a layup or open shot at least 4 out of 5 times, extra player means easy basket if you read it right.
Helpful cues
- Attack the second defender, make them choose
- Head up, seeing the whole floor, not just the basket
- Don't slow down to think, train your reads so they're automatic
