Your focus
Competing against personal bests builds intrinsic confidence that doesn't depend on comparing to others. Players who regularly break their own records develop a growth mindset and belief in their own improvement. This self-referential confidence is more durable than externally validated confidence.
Player shoots from 5 spots around the arc for 60 seconds total. Count makes.
Record the total makes as the personal best. Post it where the player can see it.
Each session, player attempts to beat their personal best. Celebrate every new record.
After 4 sessions, review the progression chart with the player.
Goal
It's working when your personal best goes up, a new record means you proved something to yourself that's real and measurable.
