How it works

Build shooting confidence in young players by celebrating each successful make in a low-pressure format.

What you need

  • basketball
  • hoop

Your focus

Confidence is built through repeated success in achievable challenges. When young players regularly make baskets, their brain associates the game with success, building intrinsic motivation. The celebration component cements positive emotional connections to the sport.

1

Player shoots from a spot 4–6 feet from the basket. Each make earns a loud celebration from the coach.

2

Player must make 5 baskets from one spot before moving to the next.

3

Player moves through 3 spots. Total goal: 15 makes.

4

Coach tracks personal records and celebrates improvements each session.

Goal

You've got it when you make 5 and feel like you can make 5 more, not relieved it's over, but ready to go again.

Helpful cues

  • You can do this, I believe in you!
  • Look at the target, not at me
  • Every make is building your confidence right now
