How it works
Maintain composure and execute fundamentals while a partner uses controlled verbal distraction.

Your focus
Real games include crowd noise, opponent comments, and officiating frustrations. Players who practice performing under verbal pressure develop the emotional regulation needed for high-stakes situations. This drill builds a mental wall between distraction and execution.
Player shoots 10 mid-range jumpers. Partner provides controlled verbal commentary after every attempt (not profanity, just competitive banter).
Player's only allowed response is to shoot the next shot. Any verbal reaction costs them a point.
Track shooting percentage under distraction. Compare to baseline percentage from a silent session.
Rotate roles. Discuss what triggered composure breaks and what helped maintain focus.
Goal
You're there when the trash talk doesn't show up in your shot mechanics or decision-making, same ball, same process, no reaction visible.
Helpful cues
- Hear it, acknowledge it internally, and forget it, 3 seconds
- Respond with the next make, not with your mouth
- Composure is a competitive weapon, they can't rattle what they can't reach
