Your focus
Breathing is the most accessible composure tool available to any athlete. Teaching children to breathe deeply before a free throw builds a stress-management habit that carries into all pressure situations. The ritual of breath-to-shot creates the pre-shot routine that defines composed shooters.
Player stands at the free-throw line with a ball.
Before shooting, player takes 1 deep breath in through the nose and out through the mouth.
Player bounces the ball 3 times (their chosen routine), then shoots.
Repeat 10 times. Coach tracks: how many times did the player skip the breath?
Goal
You've got it when you take one deep breath before every free throw and the ball goes up the same way every time, routine beats nerves.
Helpful cues
- Breathe in calm, shoot with calm
- 3 bounces, 1 breath, one shot, same every time
- Your body follows your breath, slow it down
