Your focus
Fast breaks require instant decisions, and verbal communication is what keeps players from colliding or giving up the ball. The highest-efficiency fast break teams talk constantly, identifying the numbers advantage and the best shot before reaching the paint. This drill builds that automatic communication reflex.
Three offensive players start at half-court. Two defenders backpedal from the free-throw line.
As the break develops, offensive players must call their lane ('left!', 'right!', 'trail!') out loud.
The player who calls 'shot' takes the shot, no shot can be taken without a verbal call.
Defenders call 'ball' and 'help' assignments the moment the break starts. Debrief every rep.
Goal
Success is running the 3-on-2 to a clean layup or open shot using only words to organize the lanes, no defaulting to what feels natural, talk your way through it.
Helpful cues
- Talk determines the outcome before the ball does
- If nobody calls 'shot,' nobody shoots, communication is the trigger
- Defense: talking slows the offense down even before a body does
