How it works

Maintain a positive, calm attitude after missing free throws in a simulated pressure scenario.

What you need

  • basketball
  • hoop

Your focus

How a player responds to a miss reveals their true attitude. Teaching players to reset mentally after a miss prevents negative spirals that hurt team performance. Consistent attitude under mild pressure builds mental toughness for games.

1

Player shoots 2 consecutive free throws. If both are made, no consequence.

2

If either is missed, player must sprint a lane and back before shooting again.

3

Coach watches for positive body language, chin up, deep breath, reset routine.

4

After all reps, coach gives feedback on attitude, not just makes/misses.

Goal

You've got it when you step back to the line with the same routine after a miss as after a make, your response is the same regardless of outcome.

Helpful cues

  • Miss with your chest up, not your head down
  • Reset your routine, same process every time
  • Attitude after the miss matters more than the miss itself
