Your focus
Attitude is contagious , positive bench energy lifts the entire team's performance. Giving players an assigned encourager role teaches them that leadership and attitude are responsibilities, not just feelings. This skill is as important as any physical skill in basketball.
During a small-sided activity, one player sits out as the designated encourager.
The encourager's only job is to cheer specific, genuine compliments, not just noise.
Coach scores the encourager on specificity: 'Nice cut!' scores higher than just 'Yeah!'
Rotate the role every 3 minutes so everyone experiences it.
Helpful cues
- Say what you saw, specific praise lands harder
- Stand up, get loud, make your teammate feel it
- Your attitude on the bench affects the player on the court
