How it works

Master defensive pursuit angles to cut off ball handlers attempting to turn the corner.

What you need

  • basketball
  • partner

Your focus

Elite defenders don't chase , they anticipate and cut off. This drill trains the spatial awareness needed to take the right angle instead of reacting late. Players who master pursuit angles can guard quicker players despite a speed disadvantage.

1

Offensive player starts at half-court sideline with ball; defender starts at elbow.

2

On go, offense attacks the corner; defender must take pursuit angle to beat them to the spot.

3

If defender arrives first, they force a jump stop and no layup; if late, offense scores.

4

Alternate roles after 5 reps each and track success rate.

Goal

It's clicking when you consistently cut off the ball handler before the corner, your angle arrived before they did, not at the same time.

Helpful cues

  • Cut to where they're going, not where they are
  • Don't run parallel, cut the angle
  • Sprint for 3 steps, then mirror

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge
