How it works

Develop basic lateral quickness and direction changes while maintaining low athletic stance.

What you need

  • cones
  • basketball

Your focus

Young players who can change direction quickly are harder to guard and better at closing out on defense. Repetitive cone weaving trains the nervous system to react faster. Starting at this age builds habits that carry into advanced play.

1

Set up 5 cones in a straight line, each 3 feet apart.

2

Player starts in athletic stance at one end with ball in hands.

3

Shuffle laterally around each cone, staying low and keeping eyes up.

4

At the last cone, sprint back to start and repeat.

Goal

You've got it when you shuffle around every cone without your feet crossing and you stay low the whole way, not standing up to turn, just redirecting.

Helpful cues

  • Stay low, bend your knees!
  • Quick feet, don't cross them
  • Eyes up, not on the ground

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Remove the ball, focus on footwork only.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge
