How it works

Master the Turk ride and develop the ability to transition seamlessly from Turk control to a break-down or pinning combination against a live, resisting opponent.

What you need

  • wrestling mat

Your focus

The Turk ride is an advanced top-control position that gives the top wrestler significant leverage over the opponent's hips and legs, but it requires precise body positioning and constant adjustment. Training the Turk in a live series , where the bottom wrestler actively counters , forces the top wrestler to problem-solve from an advanced position under pressure. Mastering Turk transitions separates wrestlers who can merely hold top position from those who can actively score from it.

1

Top wrestler inserts the Turk (inside leg hook with ankle control) from a legs-in position on a live bottom wrestler.

2

Bottom wrestler actively tries to clear the Turk and stand up; top maintains the position for 20 seconds.

3

When an opportunity arises (bottom flattens), top transitions to a break-down or cradle attempt.

4

Continue live for 60 seconds total; coach calls 'reset to Turk' if top loses position to keep the focus on the specific skill.

Goal

It's real when the Turk ride leads directly into a breakdown or a near-fall sequence against a live resisting partner, not just a drill, a weapon.

Helpful cues

  • Sit into the Turk, your weight is your control
  • Feel when they flatten, that's your transition moment
  • Stay connected at the hip; if you lose the hip you lose the Turk

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Bottom wrestler holds a static position and only provides passive resistance, allowing top to practice Turk mechanics and transitions without full live opposition.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Bottom wrestler is allowed to roll and sit back aggressively, requiring the top wrestler to maintain or quickly re-establish the Turk from multiple scramble angles.
