How it works

Teach the basic break-down from referee's position to flatten an opponent and establish a controlled riding position.

What you need

  • wrestling mat

Your focus

Breaking an opponent down from their base is the prerequisite for any pinning combination, and doing it correctly requires both technique and body positioning. Learning to use hip pressure and the correct arm mechanics to break an opponent down builds the foundation of effective top control. Wrestlers who master the break-down early can control matches from top position rather than simply riding passively.

1

Top wrestler starts in referee's top position with near arm across opponent's stomach and far hand on far hip.

2

Top wrestler drives near elbow into opponent's hip while pulling the far hip toward them to break the bottom wrestler flat.

3

Once opponent is flat, top wrestler adjusts to a tight hip-control position (chest on opponent's back, hips driving down).

4

Hold the flat position for 3 seconds, then bottom wrestler works back to base; repeat break-down 6-8 times.

Goal

It's clicking when you break your partner flat and they can't immediately regain their base, your break-down lands and holds.

Helpful cues

  • Drive your hip into their hip, not just your hand
  • Stay chest-to-back after the break-down
  • Keep your weight low, don't let them create space

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Bottom wrestler holds a static base without active resistance, allowing top to drill the mechanics cleanly.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Bottom wrestler actively tries to hip-heist and come to base the moment contact is made, requiring top to execute faster and with better timing.
