How it works
Build the ability to construct and lock a near-side cradle from top position, combining break-down, head control, and leg drive into a complete pinning sequence.
What you need
- wrestling mat
Your focus
The near-side cradle is one of the highest-percentage pinning combinations in wrestling at the high school level, but it requires precise sequencing from break-down through lock and drive. Drilling the construction of the cradle in isolation allows wrestlers to master each phase before executing it in live wrestling. Repeated reps also build the grip strength and hip drive needed to lock and maintain the cradle against resistance.
Top wrestler breaks opponent flat using a hip-drive break-down from referee's position.
Top wrestler reaches near arm around the opponent's near knee and far arm behind the opponent's head.
Top wrestler locks both hands together in front of the opponent's chin, completing the cradle.
Drive through the cradle, turning opponent to their back; hold near-fall for 3 seconds and repeat the construction 5 times.
Goal
You're there when you lock the near-side cradle and feel your partner run out of space, head and leg tied together, tightened down.
Helpful cues
- Head and knee come together, you're closing the space
- Lock your hands tight before you drive
- Drive toward the head side to bring them to their back
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Drill only the lock phase (steps 2-3) without the break-down entry, focusing purely on the mechanics of closing the cradle.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Bottom wrestler actively defends the knee and head during construction, requiring top to overcome resistance and complete the lock under pressure. No account needed
