How it works

Build the leg drive and core power needed to finish takedowns against resistance by driving a partner into a wall from a shot position.

What you need

  • wrestling mat
  • wall

Your focus

Finishing shots against a defending opponent requires the ability to drive powerfully through resistance, which is a trainable quality distinct from simply shooting fast. This drill isolates the finishing drive phase of the takedown and allows wrestlers to practice applying maximum force in a safe, controlled environment. It also develops the specific hip extension and back strength that characterizes elite finishers.

1

Shooter grabs partner in a double-leg position approximately 3 feet from the wall.

2

On the coach's signal, shooter drives partner into the wall with maximum leg drive, holding the double for 3 seconds.

3

Partner braces against the wall and applies back pressure to create resistance.

4

Release and reset; complete 5-6 drive reps per round, alternating who is the shooter.

Goal

Success is driving your partner into the wall and feeling them have to really resist, your leg drive and core are producing real force.

Helpful cues

  • Drive from your back leg, that's your engine
  • Head up and chest out as you drive
  • Keep driving even when it's hard, don't stop your feet

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Partner provides no resistance and simply lets the shooter drive them to the wall.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Partner pushes back actively and tries to straighten up, requiring the shooter to fight for and maintain the finishing position.
