How it works
Teach young wrestlers to immediately return to their feet after being knocked down, building the habit of never staying on the mat.
What you need
- wrestling mat
Your focus
Young wrestlers often freeze or give up after hitting the mat, so this drill trains the automatic response of getting back up quickly. Repeated exposure to falling and rising builds both physical confidence and mental toughness. It sets the foundation for resilience as a default behavior under pressure.
Wrestler starts standing in a balanced athletic stance in the center of the space.
On the coach's signal, the wrestler drops to the space in a controlled fall (butt to mat first).
Immediately upon landing, the wrestler pops back up to their feet as fast as possible.
Reset to stance and repeat 8-10 times, gradually increasing speed of the pop-up.
Helpful cues
- Chin up on the way down
- Feet under your hips when you rise
- Pop up like the mat is hot
