How it works

Your focus
Negative internal dialogue during a match degrades decision-making speed and confidence; positive self-talk cues have been shown to improve performance under pressure in competitive sports. A personal, meaningful cue anchors the wrestler to their identity as a competitor rather than to the score or situation. Consistent use of the cue across practice and competition creates a powerful conditioned response.
Wrestlers individually develop one 3-5 word personal cue phrase that represents their competitive identity (e.g., 'I finish every shot').
During the next 3 drilling sets, wrestlers silently repeat their cue phrase before each rep.
In the next live round, wrestlers use their cue phrase at the start of each period and any time they feel pressure building.
After practice, wrestlers report to a partner how and when they used the cue and whether it changed their focus.
Helpful cues
- Your cue works because you decide it works, commit to it
- Use it before you need it, not after you're already rattled
- Make it yours, the words have to mean something to you specifically
