How it works

Develop resilience by training wrestlers to continue competing effectively after being placed in a controlled disadvantaged situation.

What you need

  • wrestling mat

Your focus

Wrestlers who have only experienced starting even are unprepared for the psychological weight of being down points late in a match. Simulating deficit situations in practice , and training the response , makes the actual experience far less disorienting. Wrestlers who have practiced coming back are far more likely to execute rather than panic when it counts.

1

Wrestler begins a 2-minute live round with the coach declaring they are 'down 3 points with 2 minutes left.'

2

Wrestler must compete with urgency and intention appropriate to the score deficit, increased attack rate and risk tolerance.

3

Coach and partner do not adjust their effort; the deficit is simulated psychologically, not through actual scoring.

4

Debrief: how did the simulated deficit change decision-making? What worked? What froze up?

Goal

Success is continuing to compete effectively after being placed at a disadvantage, resilience is doing your next best move, not the perfect move.
