How it works

Develop spatial awareness of the mat boundary by drilling basic techniques while progressively approaching the edge.

What you need

  • wrestling mat

Your focus

Many wrestlers only develop mat awareness reactively after stepping out in a match; proactive edge training builds the proprioceptive sense of mat position before it costs points. Drilling near the edge with controlled exposure allows wrestlers to become comfortable in boundary situations. This awareness becomes tactically valuable when wrestlers learn to use the boundary defensively.

1

Partners begin drilling a technique (e.g., collar tie entries) at center mat.

2

Each successive rep, the pair moves one step closer to the boundary, coach calls the direction.

3

When one wrestler's foot reaches the boundary, they must circle back to center without being cued by the coach.

4

Practice for 3 sets of 90 seconds; award a point each time a wrestler self-corrects before stepping out.

Goal

It's clicking when you're still drilling cleanly right at the edge, awareness of the boundary doesn't break your technique.

Helpful cues

  • Know where you are without looking, feel the edge
  • When you're near the line, shorten your stance, don't overextend
  • The center of the mat is always your home base

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Place a visible tape line 2 feet inside the actual boundary to give wrestlers an early warning zone.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Conduct the drill with eyes closed (during the movement phase only) to develop pure proprioception.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
