How it works

Teach young wrestlers to recognize and respect mat boundaries through a game-based movement activity.

What you need

  • wrestling mat

Your focus

Young wrestlers often have no spatial awareness of the mat edge, leading to boundary violations and dangerous situations. A movement game that incorporates the boundary as a game element makes learning the mat's edges fun and memorable. This foundational awareness prevents unsafe falls and begins building the boundary-exploitation skills used in advanced wrestling.

1

All wrestlers move freely within the mat boundary, running, shuffling, skipping, without stepping off.

2

One wrestler is designated 'it' and tries to tag others; tagged wrestlers freeze.

3

Wrestlers who step off the mat boundary are also frozen.

4

Frozen wrestlers can be unfrozen by a teammate crawling through their legs; play until all are frozen or 2 minutes elapse.

Goal

You've got it when you freeze before stepping out, your body knows where the boundary is without looking down.

Helpful cues

  • Feel the edge with your feet, don't look down
  • The boundary is your enemy in the game and your friend in a match
  • Stay inside, every step outside costs you

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Use a smaller defined area within the mat so boundaries are easier to recognize.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a second 'it' wrestler to increase pressure and make boundary awareness more critical.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
