How it works
Compete for dominant hand position in live rounds where takedowns only count if preceded by a defined tie-up position.

Your focus
Constraining live wrestling to require a tie-up prerequisite forces wrestlers to invest in hand fighting rather than relying purely on athletic ability to score. This format rewards technical dominance in neutral and punishes passive or defensive hand fighting habits. Wrestlers develop the ability to create offense from controlled positions rather than scrambles.
Two wrestlers start in neutral stance; coach designates the required tie-up (e.g., double underhooks or two-on-one).
Wrestlers compete to establish the required tie-up position; only after gaining the designated tie-up may they attempt a takedown.
Takedowns scored from the wrong position do not count, both wrestlers return to neutral.
Run 2-minute rounds with a 30-second debrief; rotate the required tie-up each round across 5 rounds.
Goal
It's real when your takedowns only come after you've established the tie-up, position before attack, every time.
Helpful cues
- Win the tie before you attack, patience is a weapon
- Use your whole body to establish position, not just your arms
- Once you have the tie-up, attack immediately, don't admire the position
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Allow any inside position (not a specific tie-up) to qualify for a takedown attempt.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Require that the tie-up be maintained through the finish, any loss of grip during the shot nullifies the takedown. No account needed
