How it works

Develop the ability to gain and maintain inside underhook position through continuous pummeling with a partner.

What you need

  • wrestling mat

Your focus

Inside position , particularly the underhook , is the foundation of offensive wrestling from the tie-up; pummeling develops the feel and muscle memory to win this battle automatically. Repetitive pummeling builds the shoulder strength and arm speed needed to consistently secure inside control. Wrestlers with superior underhook pummeling skills create more takedown opportunities.

1

Partners clinch chest-to-chest in over-under position, each has one overhook and one underhook.

2

Both wrestlers simultaneously work to gain both underhooks by pummeling their arms inside and through the opponent's arms.

3

When a wrestler achieves double underhooks, they maintain the position for a 3-count before releasing and starting over.

4

Pummel continuously for 60-second rounds with 20 seconds of rest; complete 5 rounds.

Goal

Success is staying on the inside position through 30 seconds of continuous pummeling, if you get pushed to the outside, you work back immediately.

Helpful cues

  • Lead with your elbow, not your hand, when pummeling in
  • Chest pressure keeps you close, don't back away
  • When you get the underhook, sit into it with your hips

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Start each round with one wrestler already in double underhooks and focus only on maintaining versus breaking.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a live takedown attempt as soon as double underhooks are achieved, pummeling becomes setup.
