How it works
Develop explosive and coordinated sprawl mechanics that allow wrestlers to defend takedowns and immediately return to offense.
What you need
- wrestling mat
Your focus
The sprawl requires precise timing, hip extension, and body awareness , all components of advanced coordination. A poorly coordinated sprawl is easily beaten, while a crisp sprawl immediately shifts the match dynamic. Drilling sprawl with immediate recovery trains the body to treat defense and offense as one continuous movement.
Wrestler stands in base position; coach calls 'sprawl' and points left, right, or center.
Wrestler explodes into a directional sprawl, hips drive to the mat, legs kick back, chest pressure forward.
Immediately after the sprawl, wrestler pops hips forward and returns to a two-on-one or collar tie.
Twenty reps total, varying direction; coach evaluates hip explosion and speed of recovery.
Goal
Success is a sprawl that's explosive and lands in a solid hip-down position, not just falling back, but actively snapping your hips.
Helpful cues
- Hips down and through
- Chest stays heavy, don't pop up early
- Recovery is part of the sprawl
