How it works
Develop advanced mat coordination through the Granby roll and hip switch series used for bottom position escapes.
What you need
- wrestling mat
Your focus
The Granby roll and hip switch require shoulder awareness, hip flexibility, and directional body control that separate functional bottom wrestlers from stagnant ones. These movements train wrestlers to use their entire body as a coordinated unit rather than isolated limbs. Mastery of this series dramatically improves escape and reversal rates.
Wrestler sits on the mat in a seated position; drill a hip switch to one side, both sit bones contact mat in sequence.
Continue the hip switch into a Granby roll, shoulder hits the mat, legs swing over.
Complete the roll to the opposite base position; repeat in the other direction.
Chain five consecutive Granby-hip switch combinations in each direction without stopping.
Goal
You're there when the Granby roll flows into the hip switch without stopping, they're one connected escape series, not separate moves.
Helpful cues
- Lead with your hip, not your shoulder
- Stay compact, long limbs get caught
- Roll smooth, not fast, speed comes from smoothness
