How it works

Train advanced bottom wrestlers to recognize, defend, and counter common tilt attempts with a linked response sequence.

What you need

  • wrestling mat

Your focus

Tilts are among the highest near-fall-scoring techniques in high school and collegiate wrestling, so bottom wrestlers who can systematically prevent and reverse them gain a significant advantage. Linking defense to an immediate counter trains the mindset that defense is never the end goal , it transitions to offense. This drill develops the awareness and hip-fighting skills that distinguish elite bottom wrestlers.

1

Bottom wrestler is on all fours; top wrestler sets up a tight waist with a near ankle or arm bar tilt attempt.

2

Bottom wrestler focuses on keeping their hips flat, posting an elbow to the mat, and driving their near knee toward the center.

3

As the tilt is defended, bottom wrestler immediately transitions into a sit-out, Granby, or switch counter.

4

Complete 5-minute live rounds focused on this tilt defense and counter sequence with full-resistance partners.

Goal

It's real when you feel the tilt coming and shut it down before it develops, recognition triggers the counter, not the tilt scoring.

Helpful cues

  • Elbow to the mat the instant you feel the tilt
  • Hip flat, as soon as your hip tilts, near-fall points follow
  • Every defense must become an attack, don't just survive
