How it works

Build the mental stamina and competitive attitude to sustain full-effort wrestling during a simulated exhausting third period.

What you need

  • wrestling mat

Your focus

Competitive attitude is tested most severely late in a match when the body is fatigued and the scoreboard is close , this drill targets exactly that moment. Training the mind to choose maximum effort when the body is asking to coast is the essence of competitive attitude development. Wrestlers who have experienced this in practice are more likely to compete through it in a match.

1

Run two full 2-minute live periods before this drill to pre-fatigue athletes.

2

Begin a 2-minute 'third period' where wrestlers compete with full intensity as if the match is on the line.

3

Coach actively provides encouragement and holds wrestlers accountable to their effort level, calling out any coasting.

4

Post-drill discussion: each wrestler identifies one moment they chose attitude over comfort.

Goal

You're there when fatigue in the third period doesn't change your attack rate, you're just as dangerous at 5:30 as at 0:30.

Helpful cues

  • Your body says stop, your attitude says go
  • Tie score, ten seconds left, what do you do?
  • Fatigue is the same for both wrestlers; attitude separates them
