How it works
Develop mental toughness and competitive attitude by simulating a points-down match scenario that requires full effort to close the gap.

Your focus
Wrestlers who have mentally practiced being down in a match respond better when it happens in competition than those who have only experienced winning positions. This drill builds confidence in the athlete's ability to compete back from a deficit, reinforcing that attitude determines effort and effort determines outcomes. The scenario-based format makes attitude development concrete and measurable.
Coach sets up a 60-second live wrestling situation where the wrestler starts down 4 points.
Wrestler's goal is to score as many points as possible through maximum effort.
Regardless of the outcome, coach evaluates and provides feedback on effort and attitude, not just score.
Repeat with different partners and rotate the points-down position.
Goal
It's clicking when being down on points makes you move faster and attack more, deficits should ignite effort, not lower it.
Helpful cues
- Points on the board don't define your effort, you do
- Urgency, not panic, breathe and attack
