How it works
Develop basic lateral quickness and directional awareness by playing a tag game within mat boundaries.
What you need
- wrestling mat
Your focus
Young wrestlers learn to move their feet quickly and react to unpredictable directional changes in a fun, low-pressure context. Staying inside mat boundaries introduces spatial awareness critical to match positioning. The game format builds instinctive foot movement without requiring technical instruction.
Pair wrestlers on a single mat square and designate one as the tagger.
Both wrestlers assume an athletic stance with knees slightly bent and weight on the balls of their feet.
The tagger attempts to touch the partner's shoulder while the partner evades for 20 seconds.
Switch roles and repeat; coach calls out direction cues ('left,' 'back') to add reactive challenge.
Goal
You've got it when you're the hardest person to tag, your feet are always moving and you're always changing direction.
Helpful cues
- Stay low and on your toes
- Keep your head up and eyes on your partner
- Short, quick steps, don't cross your feet
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Expand the boundary to a full mat so the evader has more space.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Restrict the boundary to a 5-foot circle to force faster direction changes. No account needed
