How it works

Maximize first-step quickness and pursuit speed on short drop shots and deep corner serves by training rapid directional changes under live pressure.

What you need

  • volleyball
  • net

Your focus

Advanced servers target the seams and corners to exploit slow-starting passers. Training the explosive first step from a ready position and the full-sprint pursuit of a short or deep ball challenges the passer's first-step speed and reading accuracy simultaneously. This is the highest-difficulty passing speed test.

1

Server alternates between a very short serve (just over the net) and a very deep serve (within 1 foot of baseline) in random order.

2

Passer starts in their standard serve-receive position and must sprint forward for short balls or retreat for deep balls.

3

Passer must attempt every ball and pass to the target setter position regardless of difficulty.

4

After 15 serves, rank each attempt: pursuit successful (reached ball), pursuit but out of platform (reached but late), or no-reach (ball fell). Goal is 12 of 15 pursuits reached.

Goal

It's real when you reach a deep corner serve and still pass it to target, speed to the ball and control on contact, both.

Helpful cues

  • First step is a sprint step, no jog allowed
  • Read the serve trajectory in the first 10 feet of flight
  • Even a bad pass from a full sprint is better than watching it drop

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Eliminate the deep serve, train forward pursuit only to a short ball, which is the more common challenge.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a 3-second clock, if the passer does not complete a platform contact within 3 seconds of the serve crossing the net, it counts as a no-reach.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
