How it works
Improve lateral court coverage speed and deceleration control through a timed line-to-line sprint pattern.

Your focus
Volleyball court coverage requires repeated short lateral sprints with abrupt stops and direction changes rather than long linear runs. Training this specific movement pattern builds the hip abductor strength and footwork mechanics needed to cover defensive zones effectively. Timed repetitions build competitive urgency and track improvement.
Mark three lines on the court 10 feet apart (sideline, center, opposite sideline).
Player starts at the center line; on 'go,' sprints to the right sideline, touches it, returns to center, sprints to the left sideline, and returns to center.
Time each repetition; rest 30 seconds between reps.
Complete 5 timed reps and record the average; set a personal improvement goal for the following week.
Goal
It's clicking when you feel in control at every stopping point, speed up the shuffle, but stop sharp at each line.
Helpful cues
- Chop your steps to decelerate, don't glide into the line
- Drive off the outside foot to change direction
- Arms pump for lateral power, don't let them go limp
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Reduce to 2 lines (left and right only) and allow a 3-second rest at each sideline touch.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
At each line touch, the player must drop to a defensive stance and pick up a ball placed there before sprinting back.No account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
