How it works

Teach the mechanics of the underhand serve so every young player can consistently get the ball over the net.

What you need

  • volleyball
  • net

Your focus

The underhand serve is the appropriate entry point for ages 6-9 because it requires minimal shoulder strength and allows players to experience success quickly. Early serving success builds confidence and engagement. Correct underhand mechanics also transfer to overhand patterns when players are physically ready.

1

Players stand behind the service line (or closer if needed) and hold the ball in the non-dominant hand at waist height.

2

Step forward with the opposite foot, drop the ball slightly, and swing the dominant fist through the center of the ball.

3

Practice 5 swings without the net from close distance (10 feet) to establish contact feel.

4

Move to the full service line and serve 10 balls, tracking how many clear the net. Celebrate every successful serve.

Goal

You've got it when the ball goes over the net and lands inside the court 3 times in a row, clean contact and a full follow-through.

Helpful cues

  • Step, drop, swing, in that order
  • Hit the center of the ball with a flat fist
  • Follow through toward the net

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Allow players to stand 10–15 feet inside the service line if they cannot reach the net from full distance.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a target cone in Zone 5 or Zone 1 to introduce directional serving.
