How it works

Master the 4-step jump serve approach, toss timing, and airborne contact for maximum velocity and downward angle.

What you need

  • volleyball
  • net

Your focus

The jump serve is the highest-risk, highest-reward serve in competitive volleyball. When executed correctly, it combines a full approach toss, explosive vertical jump, and maximum arm speed to create a ball that is nearly impossible to pass with perfect form. Mastering the approach-toss relationship is the most critical and most frequently missed component.

1

Begin without a ball: run 10 rehearsal approaches (4-step, right-left-right-left for right-handers) from behind the service line, jumping and completing a full arm swing at the peak.

2

Introduce the toss, player practices tossing 4–6 feet forward and 3–4 feet high, catching the ball in the air at maximum jump height. Repeat 10 times.

3

Combine the full jump serve: approach, toss forward, jump, contact at peak with full arm swing and wrist snap over the ball.

4

Serve to 10 targets in Zone 6 from full depth. Track aces, in-zone serves, and service errors to calculate efficiency.

Goal

It's real when your toss, approach, and air contact all happen in one continuous motion, not three separate actions, one connected serve.

Helpful cues

  • Toss forward and high, you are running INTO the toss
  • Contact at the absolute peak of your jump
  • Full arm speed, this is a swing, not a punch

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Isolate the toss drill only, toss and catch in the air 20 times until the timing is automatic before adding contact.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Target short zones (Zone 2 and Zone 4 sharp angle) with the jump serve, requiring precise directional control at maximum velocity.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
