How it works

Train defenders to read hitter body mechanics and shoulder angle to anticipate attack direction before contact.

What you need

  • volleyball
  • net
  • blocking pads or box for hitter elevation

Your focus

Great defensive players read hitters, not the ball. By the time the ball leaves the hitter's hand, a well-trained defender has already taken their first step toward the landing zone. This drill builds the cue-recognition habits , reading shoulder rotation, elbow drop, and hip facing , that allow defenders to move anticipatorily rather than reactively.

1

Hitter stands on a box at the net; defender stands in a defensive position on the opposite side.

2

Hitter performs a slow-motion swing in one direction (line or angle); defender calls the direction BEFORE the hitter contacts the ball.

3

Hitter executes the swing at full speed; defender attempts to dig based on their read. Coach tracks: correct read + dig, correct read + no dig, wrong read.

4

Introduce deception: hitter uses a cut shot or roll shot from the same shoulder angle, defender must stick with their read and move appropriately.

Goal

Success is moving before the hitter swings, you anticipated the angle and were already there when the ball arrived.

Helpful cues

  • Watch the hitting shoulder, not the hands
  • Step before the swing, not after
  • Commit to your read, hesitation loses the ball

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Hitter only hits line OR angle, defender knows the hitter's tendency and drills one read at a time.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a second defender; both must read and call independently before comparing notes on who had the correct read.
