How it works
Demonstrate the measurable impact of communication on team performance by comparing silent and vocal scrimmages.

- full court
- scoreboard
Your focus
Players often underestimate how much communication improves performance until they experience its absence. The contrast between a silent scrimmage (where errors spike) and a vocal scrimmage (where the same players perform significantly better) is a powerful and self-evident lesson. USA Volleyball IMPACT uses this comparison to make communication non-negotiable.
Run a 6v6 scrimmage to 15 points with a rule: NO communication allowed (no 'mine,' no calls, no signals).
Record score, number of ball-handling errors, and collisions.
Take a 3-minute break. Discuss what happened and why.
Run a second scrimmage to 15 points with MANDATORY communication: every ball must be called, every block must be signaled, setter must call sets.
Compare statistics. Discuss the difference in team chemistry, error rate, and confidence.
Goal
Success is a measurable score difference between the silent and loud scrimmage, if it doesn't change anything, keep practicing until it does.
Helpful cues
- What did it feel like to play in silence?
- Communication is a competitive advantage, most teams take it for granted
- Loud teams win close games
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Run 5-point mini-games rather than full sets to reduce fatigue during the silent scrimmage.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Add external noise (music or crowd simulation) during the vocal scrimmage to train communication under real-match conditions. No account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
