How it works
Establish a team-wide verbal defensive call system so players communicate block assignments and defensive coverage every rally.

Your focus
Defensive breakdowns in volleyball are more often communication failures than athletic failures. When blockers and defenders share information about the attack, they can position themselves optimally before contact. A standardized call system ensures everyone uses the same language, reducing confusion even under pressure.
Introduce a simple call system: blocker calls 'LINE' or 'ANGLE' to tell the defending group which shot they are taking away.
Libero or back-row calls 'I've got cross' or 'I've got line' to confirm defensive coverage.
Run a 6v0 walk-through: blockers read the set and call their block, defenders adjust positions based on the call.
Introduce a hitter. Players must complete the full communication sequence before the attacker contacts the ball.
Award points only when the full call was made. Run to 10 communication points.
Helpful cues
- Call it early, before the set is in the air is too late
- The back row adjusts to the blocker's call, not the other way around
- Wrong call executed together beats no call executed individually
