How it works
Train setters to verbally communicate their setting intentions to hitters before and during each play.

Your focus
The setter is the quarterback of the offense. When setters actively communicate , telling hitters which set to expect, or calling audibles based on a bad pass , hitters can adjust their approach timing, reducing errors and improving attack efficiency. USA Volleyball IMPACT emphasizes setter leadership as a communication imperative.
Setter and two hitters run a 3-touch offensive sequence (pass-set-hit).
Setter must verbally call the set before delivering it: 'Four!' (outside), 'One!' (quick), 'Back two!' (back set).
If the pass is off-target, setter calls 'High ball!' and hitters adjust their approach timing.
Run 20 sequences. After each, hitter confirms whether they received the call in time to adjust ('Got it before I started my approach' vs. 'Too late').
Setter improves call timing based on hitter feedback until all calls come before the hitter begins their approach.
Goal
It's clicking when your hitters adjust their approach based on your verbal call before the set, they're moving because you told them, not guessing.
Helpful cues
- Call the set as the ball reaches you, not after you set it
- A hitter who knows the set is a better hitter
- High ball call is the most important call you can make
