How it works

Train advanced players to read an opponent's pattern, identify a tactical weakness, and consciously adjust their game plan mid-match.

What you need

  • tennis balls
  • tennis racket
  • full court
  • opponent
  • score tracker
  • tactical card set

Your focus

The ability to adjust tactics during a match is what separates advanced players from those who are technically equal but tactically rigid. Most players have practiced their own patterns but have not practiced the meta-skill of identifying and exploiting a specific opponent weakness under match conditions. This drill creates structured practice for tactical problem-solving in a competitive context.

1

Play a 6-game practice set under standard scoring rules.

2

After 3 games, coach stops play and asks the player to identify one observable pattern of their opponent (e.g., 'they always go cross-court on the second ball from the backhand').

3

Player selects a tactical card from the set (e.g., 'attack to the backhand early,' 'serve wide and poach,' 'draw to backhand then go inside-out forehand') and commits to that tactic for the next 3 games.

4

After the set, player rates: (a) how clearly they identified the pattern, (b) how consistently they implemented the adjustment, and (c) whether the adjustment worked. Discuss as a group.

Goal

It's real when you notice a pattern in how your opponent is playing and consciously change your game to exploit it, within 2-3 games, not 2-3 sets.

Helpful cues

  • Observe first, adjust second.
  • What did they do MOST often? That's where you start.
  • Stick to the plan for 3 games, give it enough data before you change again.

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Coach provides the opponent scouting observation ('they struggle with high balls to the backhand') so the player only needs to implement the tactical response.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Opponent is told mid-set to change their pattern, requiring the player to identify the new pattern and re-adjust tactics within the same set.

Build a practice plan

Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
