How it works

Develop serve power by systematically building and connecting the kinetic chain from legs through torso to arm.

What you need

  • tennis balls
  • tennis racket
  • court
  • optional speed radar

Your focus

Serve power is not generated by arm strength alone but by the sequential activation of legs, core, shoulder, and wrist in a coordinated kinetic chain. Breaking the serve into segment-by-segment power drills ensures each link in the chain is trained before combining them. Players who isolate and strengthen each segment consistently increase serve speed faster than those who only practice full serves.

1

Stage 1 (legs only): Player bends knees deeply and jumps up at contact point, throwing racket upward without ball to feel leg drive.

2

Stage 2 (torso): Add shoulder rotation to the jump, player coils and uncoils the torso as they jump, still without ball.

3

Stage 3 (full chain): Add the toss and serve the ball, consciously initiating power from the leg push, through torso rotation, into arm extension.

4

Serve 20 full-chain serves; if a radar is available, record speed every 5 serves and track progression across the set.

Goal

You're there when you can feel your whole body contributing to the serve, legs load, hips turn, arm fires in sequence. One connected motion.

Helpful cues

  • Power starts from the ground, push the court away.
  • Coil the shoulders, then uncoil into the ball.
  • Snap the wrist last, it's the final power release.

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Isolate Stage 1 and 2 for the entire session without advancing to full serve if the sequencing is unclear.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Serve 5 consecutive serves at maximum controlled speed; any double fault resets the count to zero.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
