How it works
Build overhead smash power and mechanics by practicing explosive upward arm extension and racket acceleration from the trophy position.
What you need
- tennis balls
- tennis racket
- full court
Your focus
The overhead requires the same explosive arm extension as the serve but from a dynamic, moving position; developing power in this shot builds confidence at net. Practicing the smash from a controlled throw-and-hit context allows players to focus on mechanics before transitioning to live lob scenarios. Overhead power development also strengthens the shoulder and rotator cuff in a tennis-specific way.
Player stands at the service line in trophy position; a parent or coach throws a high lob directly over the player's head.
Player shuffles back with skip steps to position under the ball, pointing the non-dominant hand up as a sight line.
Player swings aggressively through the ball with a full pronation finish, aiming for the opposite service box.
Complete 15 overheads from the service line; then 10 from the baseline to practice the skip-step movement under a deeper lob.
Goal
Success is an overhead that you can feel in your arm all the way through, explosive extension up into the ball, not a push.
Helpful cues
- Point up, see the ball before you swing.
- Extend fully, reach for the sky.
- Snap your wrist through contact for power.
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Throw the ball directly to the player's ideal contact point (no movement required) so mechanics can be isolated.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Coach lobs to alternating sides so the player must move laterally before setting up for the overhead. No account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
