How it works

Execute high-percentage first and second serves with specific placement and spin under match-score pressure.

What you need

  • tennis balls
  • tennis racket
  • full court
  • return partner

Your focus

Advanced players must command the serve as a tactical weapon; practicing placement and spin in isolation is insufficient without match-pressure stress. Serving at specific score situations (30-40, deuce, match point) trains players to access their best serving mechanics when the stakes are highest. Working against a live returner forces adaptive placement decisions rather than mechanical repetition.

1

Announce a score to yourself, or have a parent call one before each service sequence (e.g., '30-40, deuce court, you serving').

2

Player completes a full pre-point routine then serves both first and second serves against a live returner.

3

Server earns 3 points for an ace or unreturned serve to a pre-called zone; 1 point for making both serves in; loses 2 points for a double fault.

4

Run 20 service sequences across varying pressure scores; tally points and debrief: which scores caused the most double faults and why.

Goal

It's real when your serve percentage and placement stay consistent whether the score is 0-0 or ad-out, pressure shouldn't change the serve, only your commitment to it.

Helpful cues

  • Higher stakes, same routine.
  • First serve: commit. Second serve: spin and depth over power.
  • After a double fault, reset your routine, don't change your technique.

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Remove the live returner and use target cones only, but maintain the pressure-score announcements.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Require the server to win the point (not just make the serve) to earn points, adding the full rally challenge to the pressure scenario.
