How it works

Develop a repeatable, consistent toss even when fatigue or competitive pressure is introduced.

What you need

  • tennis balls
  • tennis racket
  • court
  • hula hoop or target ring

Your focus

The toss is the first motion of the serve and its inconsistency accounts for the majority of service errors at the intermediate junior level. Training toss accuracy under light pressure conditions transfers more directly to match play than practicing only in low-stakes settings. Isolating the toss as a skill that can be trained separately empowers players to self-correct this foundational element.

1

Place a hula hoop flat on the court just inside the baseline at the 1 o'clock toss position.

2

Player performs 20 isolated tosses (no swing), attempting to have the ball fall into the hoop; coach tracks makes and misses.

3

After the toss isolation set, player serves 10 balls using their full motion, noting how toss quality affects serve quality.

4

Final challenge: player serves 5 consecutive serves in which the ball must land in the toss hoop before the swing begins; any toss outside the hoop requires a re-serve without count.

Goal

Success is a toss that goes to the same spot 8 out of 10 times even when you're tired or nervous, the toss is your anchor.

Helpful cues

  • Release, don't throw.
  • Consistent hand height, every single time.
  • If your toss isn't right, catch it and start again, that's a skill, not a flaw.

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Use a larger target (towel on the court) instead of a hula hoop to allow a wider margin of success.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a 30-second rest then repeat the full drill after a short baseline rally sprint to simulate serve fatigue in a match.
