How it works
Train advanced players to maintain positive body language and re-focus after unforced errors during competitive situations.
What you need
- tennis balls
- tennis racket
- full court
- video camera (optional)
Your focus
At advanced levels, opponents consciously read body language for signs of frustration or doubt; a composed demeanor is itself a competitive weapon. Deliberate post-error response training ensures players' physical reactions support rather than undermine their mental state. Reviewing footage of post-error responses reveals patterns of negativity that may be unconscious.
Play a full competitive practice set with an added rule: after any unforced error, the player must perform a specific, pre-agreed positive reset gesture within 5 seconds.
If filmed, review 3-5 post-error moments after the set to evaluate body language quality.
For any error where the routine was not completed, replay the scenario from a coach feed and complete the routine correctly before moving on.
Coach rates each post-error response 1-3 (1 = negative, 2 = neutral, 3 = positive); target is averaging 2.5+ by end of session.
Helpful cues
- What does your body say after an error? Make it say something good.
- Positive routine within 5 seconds, clock is running.
- Champions lose points; champions also control what they do next.
