How it works

Train players to mentally reset after losing a set and compete with full intensity in the next set.

What you need

  • tennis balls
  • tennis racket
  • full court
  • score sheet

Your focus

Losing a set often causes players to carry negative momentum into subsequent sets, making the match mentally harder than it needs to be. Practicing a deliberate between-set reset protocol , physical action, positive reframe, tactical adjustment , teaches players that each set is a fresh competition. Intermediate players who learn this habit outperform equal-ability peers in multi-set formats.

1

Coach simulates a just-finished set loss by showing a score like 2-6 on a board.

2

Player performs a 3-step reset: (a) sit down for 60 seconds with water, (b) write one tactical adjustment on a card, (c) stand up and say aloud 'New set, I compete now.'

3

Player plays a 4-game practice set immediately, focused on executing the tactical adjustment noted on the card.

4

Coach scores the set but also evaluates effort and execution of the tactical adjustment, awarding a resilience point for each game where the adjustment was visible.

Helpful cues

  • The first set is history, compete in this set.
  • What will you do differently? Write it.
  • Intensity starts at the first point of the new set.

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Coach provides the tactical adjustment card pre-filled so the player only needs to focus on the mental reset.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Player loses two consecutive simulated sets before the practice set to raise the emotional challenge of recovery.
