Negative self-talk is one of the most common performance inhibitors in competitive tennis and can be replaced with deliberate practice of positive alternatives. Personalized scripts are more effective than generic phrases because they resonate with the individual player's triggers and motivations. Consistent practice in lower-stakes settings makes positive self-talk available automatically during high-pressure moments.
Players individually identify their three most common negative self-talk statements (e.g., 'I always miss that shot,' 'I can't serve in the second set').
With coach guidance, each player writes a replacement positive statement for each negative one on an index card (e.g., 'I can miss it once and make it next time,' 'My serve is a weapon, trust it').
Players carry the index card during a practice set and read one statement aloud after every error.
After the set, evaluate: which replacement statement felt most natural? Least? Refine the script for next session.
Helpful cues
- Your self-talk is coaching yourself, make it good coaching
- Say it like you mean it, not like you're reading it
- The more you say it, the more you believe it
