How it works
Develop baseline tactical awareness by teaching players to read opponent court positioning and choose crosscourt or down-the-line accordingly.

Your focus
Beginners in the 10-13 range hit to where they are comfortable rather than where the opponent is not. Teaching them to look across the net before choosing a direction is the first step in tactical shot selection. This simple two-option read builds the foundation for all future pattern play.
Player and feeder rally crosscourt; feeder deliberately positions themselves visibly to one side of the court.
Player must identify the feeder's position before contact and choose: if feeder is covering crosscourt, hit down-the-line; if feeder is centered, continue crosscourt.
After 10 rallies, coach quizzes the player: 'Why did you go down the line on that ball?' Player must articulate the reading, not just the result.
Rotate so the player feeds and reads position from the opposite role to build holistic tactical awareness.
Goal
It's clicking when you read your opponent's position before swinging and your shot goes the opposite way, you're thinking one shot ahead.

- Look at your opponent before you look at your target!
- Where is the most open space right now?
- Read first, then hit.
