How it works
Develop the ability to read opponent positioning mid-rally and choose between an open-court winner attempt and a high-percentage crosscourt rally ball.

Your focus
Intermediate players often see the open court but attempt the winner from a position that makes the shot low-percentage, leading to unforced errors. This drill teaches position-awareness as the primary input for shot selection. Practicing the conscious trade-off between risk and reward builds tactical maturity faster than free play alone.
Player rallies crosscourt with a feeder; a shadow opponent (coach or cone) begins at center and shifts visibly to one side at random intervals.
When the shadow shifts to open a side, player has two shots to either hit to the open court or reset with a safe ball, player must choose and commit.
Coach scores: open-court winner attempt earns 2 points (or -1 if missed), safe rally earns 1 point when the point eventually wins.
After 20 shots, player evaluates their decision accuracy: were the open-court attempts from positions that justified the risk?
Goal
Success is picking the right shot based on where your opponent is standing, you can feel the difference between a ball to attack and one to keep in play.
Helpful cues
- See the gap, but earn the right first!
- Is the court open or are you hoping it is?
- High percentage first, then look for the winner.
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
