How it works

Improve the coordination between the ball toss and the trophy-position loading phase of the serve to create a consistent and repeatable service motion.

What you need

  • tennis racket
  • tennis balls
  • court
  • targets (cones)

Your focus

Inconsistent toss placement is the primary cause of serve faults in junior players. Decoupling the toss-and-load from the full swing allows the player to develop toss-hand and racket-arm synchronization as independent motor skills before combining them. A repeatable toss is the single biggest predictor of serving consistency.

1

Player stands at the service line without a racket; practice tossing the ball to peak height (arm fully extended overhead) and letting it drop to a cone target placed just ahead of the front foot.

2

Add the racket: player tosses and simultaneously raises the racket to trophy position, pausing before swinging.

3

Full motion: player combines toss and swing, focusing on letting the toss dictate the swing timing rather than forcing the swing.

4

Coach places a hoop at the ideal toss peak location; player earns a point each time the toss passes through the hoop before the swing.

Goal

Success is a toss that goes up straight and lands in the same spot every time, when your toss looks boring, it's actually perfect.

Helpful cues

  • Let the toss pull the swing up!
  • Pause at trophy and check your toss!
  • Same toss height every time.

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Allow two practice tosses before the full swing to isolate the feeling of a good toss.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Blindfold the player briefly between drills; serve the first ball after removing the blindfold to test muscle-memory of toss location.

Build a practice plan

Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
