How it works

Develop advanced racket-head control and body positioning while tracking and striking moving balls from off-balance positions.

What you need

  • tennis racket
  • tennis balls
  • court

Your focus

High-level juniors often lose racket control when forced to hit on the run or from stretched positions. Training the combination of dynamic balance and precise racket-face angle under movement stress builds the neuromuscular pathways for consistent stroke production in match-like conditions. Body control while moving is a differentiator at the 14-18 age group.

1

Player starts at the center baseline; coach hits or feeds a ball angled wide to the forehand, forcing the player to run at full speed.

2

Player must hit a controlled crosscourt reply (not a down-the-line rip) while moving, demonstrating racket-face control under pressure.

3

Immediately after the first ball, coach hits a drop shot or short angle; player must recover and reach the second ball within two bounces.

4

Track consecutive controlled crosscourt replies in a row; goal is five in a row at full running pace without mishits.

Goal

You're there when you can track a moving ball from an off-balance position and still make solid contact, your body adjusts without falling apart.

Helpful cues

  • Racket face stays closed through contact!
  • Get your shoulder turned even on the run!
  • Balance after the hit, don't fall into the shot.

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Reduce running distance by feeding balls to the near side of the court rather than the extreme angle.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a third ball to the sequence, after the wide forehand and drop shot recovery, the player must close the net for a volley.
